NASB Is facilitating a search for a Superintendent for Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Schools.  S-E-M is located in rural Dawson County, with district boundaries also including parts of both Custer and Buffalo counties.  The school is located in Sumner approximately 35 miles northwest of Kearney.  Sumner is situated in the Platte River Valley, which contributes to its agricultural surroundings and close-knit atmosphere.  

S-E-M offers a wide variety of classes including college courses through Central Community College via distance learning.  In 2020, the district added a 5000 square foot weight room that also functions as the community fitness center.  The current enrollment is 216 students.  Students are able to participate in a number of extracurricular activities that are all strongly supported by the community.  

The district is looking for applicants who can:

  • Encourage a collaborative atmosphere while setting high expectations for staff and students
  • Provide consistent leadership to the board to support effective board governance
  • Be present in the community and at activities to build trust and support in leadership
  • Utilize experience in a small rural school to manage curriculum and grow offerings for students

REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's Degree with academic training in special education
- Valid teaching certificate in administration and supervision with an endorsement in administration of special education
- At least five years successful experience in public education, part of which have been in teaching or supervising in the field of special education
- Such alternative to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable
- Successfully pass district background check

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Superintendent

JOB GOAL: Supervision of and general responsibility for the total programs of Special Education PK-21, ELL, Nurses, Native Americans (Title VI), Homeless, Migrant, Poverty. To provide leadership in establishing sound educational programs for all children.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve month (260 day contract) as established by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the district's Administrative Personnel Evaluation Policy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Consistent and punctual "on site" attendance at the worksite is an essential job function
Function under the supervision and direction of the Superintendent.
Participate as an active and contributing member of the administrative and central office teams.
Attend all regular meetings of the Board of Education and special meetings related to areas of responsibilities.
Stay current on rules and regulations pertinent to area of responsibility.
Perform duties and responsibilities assigned by the Superintendent.
Organize, supervise and evaluate areas of responsibility.
Make recommendations to the Superintendent of Schools with regard to the district’s student programs.
Assist in development and administration of the district’s student programs budget.
Supervise purchasing, processing, and distribution of materials within assigned area of budget.
Assist and cooperate with the Director of Business in completing federal, state, and local reports.
Assist and cooperate with the Director of HR and building principals in recruitment, selection, assignment, and evaluation of special education staff.
Provide orientation for new special education staff.
Provide assistance and support to all personnel within assigned areas.
Provide in-service programming for special education and general education staff, as appropriate.
Develop and supervise child identification, evaluation, and placement procedures for special education programs.
Supervise adherence to Rule 51 and Rule 52: Regulations and Standards for Special Education Programs (Title 92, Nebraska Administrative Code.)
Provide public awareness information regarding special education programs. Article 2 ADMINISTRATION Policy No. 2225
Communicate with parents, as appropriate, regarding all aspects of ELL, homeless, Indian education, special education and rights of both students and parents.
Assist parents and staff in locating appropriate medical, social, and educational agencies when the need arises within school regulations and Rule 15.
Facilitate staff communication through appropriate and timely meetings.
Attend local, regional, state, and national meetings as appropriate to further the quality of student programs within the district.
Participate in staffing meetings, team meetings, and IEP conferences as appropriate to assist in determining needs of children and appropriate programs to meet those needs.
Represent the district and serve as liaison with community and state agencies.
Administer and supervise birth to 21 special education services.
Oversee compliance of all state and federal regulations related to areas of responsibility, including, but not limited to Special Education, Migrant, ELL/LEP, Poverty, Homeless, Indian Education.
The Superintendent will develop administrative regulations containing a specific job description for the Director of Student Programs.
