A School Finance Update - Loper South
Presenter: Russ Inbody
- The session will cover the changes to the State Aid formula as a result of LB 988, passed during the 2008 Legislative Session. Other school finance issues will be covered including the Poverty and Limited English Proficiency Plans that are to be filed with the Department. There will be plenty of time for questions during the session.
Student Records System - Loper North
Presenters: Bob Beecham & Marilyn Peterson
- The NSSRS is the primary vehicle for collecting data on students and staff. It is important that school personnel know that these data will be used to distribute money (state aide) and calculate results (STARS and AYP). This session will be an overview of the NSSRS and why it's important to get the data right.
Reading Standards - Stateroom F
Presenters: Kim Larson, Donlynn Rice & Jan Hoegh
- The Nebraska Reading/Writing Standards are currently being revised. Attend this session to preview the most recent draft of the standards and learn about the revision process including timelines for completion. We will also offer options for providing feedback as we strive to create a document that reflects current research, best practice, and clear language.
What's Ahead this Year in Early Childhood? - Stateroom C

- This session will provide current information regarding policy issues and topics affecting schools with programs for children from birth to 5 years old. Updates about NSSRS, Results Matter, the Legislative Interim Study regarding Early Childhood Education, and upcoming opportunities will be presented.

- A broad overview of the collections and the collection calendar, as well as an opportunity for questions on specific data collections.
Positive Behavior Supports -- Stateroom A
Presenters: Jolene Palmer & Mary Ann Losh, NDE; Jill Clevenger, Kearney Public Schools
- A system wide, general education approach to behavior, Positive Behavior Support can help schools significantly decrease office discipline referrals, increase attendance and achievement. Schools can be supported in the development of a school wide behavior plan through becoming a part of Positive Support process and the State Personnel Development Grant. This session will explain the implementation process of Positive Behavior Support and highlight the successful strategies used by Kenwood Elementary in Kearney.
Rule 10: An Overview of the Rules & Regulations for Accreditation - Stateroom E
Presenters: Rick Moses & Dennis McGuide
- All public school districts in Nebraska are required by law to be accredited. This session is designed for those who are new to administrative positions or who simply want a quick, "down and dirty" refresher of Rule 10 regulations that govern a school's accreditation status. The content is developed from a synthesis of the answers to questions and calls that come to our office throughout the school year.

Bring Civics/Government into the Classroom - Stateroom D

- Ideas will be shared for implementing Civics/Government into the classroom from the State Board's point of view, the Civics Nebraska Partnership Advisory Council's point of view, and from the Director of Social Studies.
Distance Education in Nebraska - Stateroom C

- A panel will be presenting an overview of getting the most from your investment in distance education across Nebraska. The session will focus on question from the audience and the regulations and processes that affect you. Questions to begin the conversation will include: What is distance education in Nebraska? What does distance education mean for you? What are the individual responsibilities in using distance education? What is the future of distance education in Nebraska?
Mathematics Education Update - Stateroom F

- This session will include the progress of the Mathematics Standards revision process and the next steps so you and your teachers may provide input regarding the product. You will also hear about several statewide professional development opportunities for your teachers in the area of mathematics.

- The Student Achievement Coordinator will share with the audience the purpose, requirements, and the timeline for developing and presenting the student achievement plan to the Nebraska Board of Education and the Education Committee of the Nebraska Legislature.
Addressing Diversity In Nebraska Schools: Culturally Responsive Pedagogy - Stateroom, B

- Nebraska's schools are no longer without diversity no matter how large or small meaning we need to think more about the need to be culturally competent. As our world continues to become smaller through the use of technology, as more people immigrate from around the world, as more of our children leave our communities it is essential that our instruction is culturally appropriate. The development of a culturally competent staff begins with the administration. This session will share some ideas on how to develop cultural competency throughout your community by starting with ways to work with your staff. These are strategies you can use and implement and integrate into what you are already doing.
Nebraska Post-School Outcomes Project - Stateroom A

- Nebraska Post-School Outcomes Project is a process for collecting data from former students who have IEPs in high school including information regarding their education, career plans and experience since leaving school. During the session, findings from the first year of interviews will be shared.

- In this session participants will have the opportunity to learn the most recent steps taken in the standards revision process, the current information regarding the state reading test under development, and the steps districts can expect during the transition years.
No Excuses World Language Resources at No Cost - Stateroom E

- What resources are available for improving world language education in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms? The Nebraska Department of Education has developed a variety of online resources including step-by-step lesson plans, classroom handouts, instructional videos and PowerPoints, student-centered activities, and web resource links.

- This session will highlight the changes being made in curriculum professional development and program management to provide 21st Century workplace skills to Nebraska students through Nebraska Career Education. Learn about new postsecondary partnerships through dual credit courses, career academies, new tools for career guidance, work of the new Partnerships for Innovation Statewide Consortium, Perkins IV, and collaboration with FutureForce Nebraska.
Administrators YOU are Important in High Ability Learning - Stateroom D

- Administrative support for the district High Ability Learning Program is key to a successful program. Information will be given regarding the role of local district administrators play in the High Ability Learning program and why their support is critical for a successful program.
How will Kindergarten Standards Impact Classroom Practices? - Stateroom F

- Come to this session to provide input for NDE guidance documents to support kindergarten standards and evidence-based practices. Your input will inform kindergarten policy and standards, as well as upcoming development of kindergarten early learning guidelines. A summary of issues and topics that have been identified by kindergarten teachers throughout Nebraska will be included.
CIIV: Continuous Improvement Integrated Visits and the CIP P Toolkit -- Furthering the Conversation - Loper South
Presenters: Marilyn Peterson, Freida Lange, Don Fritz and Margaret McInteer
- The CIP Toolkit was introduced to Nebraska Schools in 2006. Its use was expanded in 2007-2008 with the CIIV pilot project which integrated school district visits and monitoring of programs. This session will review the results of the CIIV project and offer an opportunity for new districts to become involved. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions.
How to Build Successful, Authentic Family Engagement which Impacts Student Achievement - Stateroom A

- The presenters will share recent research, resources and strategies to overcome barriers for meaningful family engagement. There will be an opportunity for the audience to share challenges and successes.
English Language Learner Leadership Institute (ELLLI) - Stateroom B

- Leading change is moving to the forefront of school leaders' agendas. This session will share the journey of Nebraska school districts and their participation in a series of workshops as they institute ELL reform efforts. You will learn about a collaborative program for district teams that combines balanced leadership and classroom instruction that works for ELL students, including future plans to share research-based strategies with all districts in Nebraska.
RtI For Administrators - Stateroom E

- This presentation will review the RtI framework and the Essential Elements for effectiveness in RtI implementation. The role of the administrator in the RtI process and steps administrators can take to prepare for RtI implementation will also be discussed.

- This session will focus on the report "America's Digital Schools 2008" and the top trends to watch supported by current research. These topics will include 1:1 Computing, Learning Management Systems, Online Assessment, Computing Devices, Interactive Whiteboards, and Internet Bandwidth.
Accreditation through NCA/AdvancED Standards & Quality Assurance Reviews - Stateroom F
Presenters: Freida Lange and Margaret McInteer
- State accreditation is required of all public schools in Nebraska and non-public systems can elect to meet similar accreditation standards. State accreditation status can be expanded to regional accreditation through voluntary review and membership in the North Central Association. This session will review the benefits and current requirements of NCA through the lens of the 7 AdvancED Standards and the Quality Assurance Review (QAR) visitation.
Integrating the World into the School Curriculum - Stateroom B

- Only ten percent of traditional workshops are implemented to a degree that positively impacts student learning. In this session school staff will share how they are involving their entire staff in a job-embedded system of professional development that is helping all students learn .
